€73.33 /L
Domaine Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie Madinière 2023 showcases Syrah, entwined with a touch of Viognier, on the sunlit schists of the northern appellation. Hand-harvested, fermented in open vats then aged 16 to 18 months in barrels, this Côte-Rôtie reveals notes of violet, stone fruit and white pepper. The palate is fleshy and precise, offering velvety tannins supported by mouthwatering freshness. Cellaring potential: 5 to 10 years, ideal with roasted veal tenderloin or roast poultry. A cuvée with a finely chiselled style, emblematic of Cuilleron's exacting standard.
Description
From selected parcels on the sun-drenched schist slopes in the north of Côte-Rôtie, the Domaine Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie Madinière 2023 epitomises the aromatic elegance and tactile depth typical of great Northern Rhône wines. This cuvée targets enthusiasts seeking a finely bred expression of Syrah, subtly lifted by a veil of Viognier, and gourmets who appreciate reds where ripe fruit sensuality meets precision in meticulous élevage. It resolves a rare equation: a wine that is both intensely perfumed and impeccably defined, its silky weave naturally complementing delicate meats. Praised by international critics, 91/100 from Jeb Dunnuck and 90/100 from Robert Parker, the 2023 Madinière is a reliable signature for both cellar and table, a conversational red as much as a gastronomic one.
Blend and winemaking
This cuvée is dominated by Syrah at about 95–97%, enriched with 3–5% Viognier which brightens the bouquet with floral nuances. The grapes come from roughly 4 hectares of south and south-east facing vines, planted on typical schist soils, a mineral backbone that gives upright structure and relief. The vineyard is managed with sustainable viticulture at high density, between 8,000 and 10,000 vines per hectare, without insecticides, to preserve soil biodiversity and berry purity. Hand-harvested at precise maturity, the grapes are rigorously selected. At the winery, fermentation in open-top vats for three weeks, punctuated by punch-downs and pump-overs, encourages delicate extraction, concentrating colour, sap and perfume without harshness. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barrels with indigenous yeasts, then a 16–18 months' ageing in barrels polishes the material, gradually integrates the wood spices and refines the tannins for a satiny texture. The goal is clear: preserve fruit brightness, frame the structure and deliver a sleek, fresh and precise finish.
Tasting notes
- Colour: Deep garnet with purple highlights, clear and bright, coating the glass with attractive viscosity, a promise of harmonious concentration and a caressing texture.
- Nose: Juicy stone-fruit bouquet suggesting black cherry and plum, lifted by a veil of violet and peony. A thread of fine spice, led by white pepper, wraps around subtle smoky hints and a graphite note that signs the schisty terroir.
- Palate: A fleshy attack, a core of ripe, pulpy fruit carried by lively freshness. Velvety tannins, tight-grained and well-mannered, structure a flavoursome mid-palate. A long, vibrant finish that lingers on violet, white pepper and mineral echoes, with a great sense of balance.
Serving temperature and tips
Serve Madinière between 16 and 18°C in large tulip glasses to reveal the floral complexity and fruit architecture. Decanting for 40 to 60 minutes will particularly enhance it in the early years, unveiling the suppleness of the tannins without upsetting the harmony. Store bottles on their side, away from light, at around 12°C with stable humidity. While the 2023 already offers immediate pleasure after decanting, it will gain forest-floor nuances and gentle sweet spices over 5 to 10 years and beyond depending on cellar conditions, offering an even more chiselled interpretation of the terroir.
Food pairings
- Aperitifs: generous charcuterie board with thinly sliced saucisson and herb terrine, black olives and tapenade, a frank dialogue between spice and fruit.
- Starters: homemade pâté en croûte, sautéed ceps in reduced jus, perfect egg with mushrooms, veal tartare lightly scented with fresh herbs.
- Mains: roasted veal tenderloin with a short white pepper jus, pink duck breast with roasted figs, oven-roasted pigeon, creamy polenta with meat jus, braised veal chop.
- Cheeses: aged Comté, sheep's tomme, farmhouse Saint-Nectaire, their milky softness complements the wine's satiny texture without overpowering it.
- Desserts: thin plum tart, lightly sweetened cherry clafoutis, spiced cake, chosen to preserve balance and freshness.
