Description

Among Médoc icons, Château Lynch-Bages 2020 embodies the quiet strength of a high-born Pauillac. A vintage of balance and concentration, it marries intense fruit with exemplary structural finesse. For enthusiasts seeking a great wine that is both generous and refined, it offers the experience of a broad palate with polished tannins, always supported by a savoury freshness. This 5th Growth from the famous 1855 classification stands out for its aromatic clarity, precision and its ability to travel through time with flair. Far from showiness, it is a wine for conversation and gastronomy, intended for cellaring, which unfolds slowly and rewards patience with ever more nuanced complexity. At the table it asserts a noble presence, without harshness, with the discreet elegance typical of great Pauillac wines that mark a rare moment.

Blend and winemaking

The 2020 is mainly composed of Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, in proportions close to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc. Winemaking aims for fine extraction that respects the purity of the fruit, then ageing of about 18 months in French oak barrels, with a high proportion of new wood around 75%, refines the contours, brings gentle spice and supports the structure without dominating it. Malolactic fermentations, carried out between tanks and barrels, contribute to the overall harmony and to the silky texture that characterises the estate's style. The alcohol level is around 13 to 13.5%, a sign of balance between concentration and freshness, with an underlying energy that promises great longevity.

Tasting notes

  • Appearance: Deep and bright, with purple highlights, it announces concentrated material and youthful vigour.
  • Nose: Opens on ripe black fruits, cassis and blackberry, joined by fine spices, a touch of white pepper and discreet, well-integrated oak. Notes of graphite and violet add an additional dimension.
  • Palate: Fleshy and upright attack, generous mid-palate, structured by tight but velvety tannins. A saline thread and freshness lengthen the finish, savoury and persistent, with a return of bright fruit and delicate spices.

Serving temperature and advice

Serve between 16 and 18°C in large glasses to encourage aeration and aromatic development. Decanting for 1 to 2 hours in the first years will reveal the complexity of the bouquet and soften the structure. Store bottles on their side, away from light, at a stable temperature. The cellaring potential extends over 15 to 20 years and more, with a recommended drinking window from 2027, then over several decades for lovers of subtly spiced tertiary maturity.

Food pairings

  • Aperitifs: fine charcuterie, gougères with aged Comté, delicate pâtés en croûte.
  • Starters: game terrine, hand-cut beef tartare, pan-fried mushrooms with herbs.
  • Main courses: Pauillac rack of lamb, dry-aged rib of beef, roasted pigeon with reduced black-berry jus.
  • Cheeses: aged Comté, Sardinian pecorino, Tomme de Savoie, floral-rind pressed cheeses.
  • Desserts: pairing by atmosphere rather than sweetness, favour lightly sweet cocoa notes, cocoa nibs, or a spiced poached pear.

Occasions

Château Lynch-Bages 2020 is the ideal companion:

  • To celebrate an exceptional occasion and headline a fine-dining dinner.
  • At a Sunday lunch centred on a noble cut of meat, for generous sharing.
  • As a connoisseur's gift for a lover of age-worthy Bordeaux.
