Château Croizet-Bages 2018, Pauillac AOC, 5th Grand Cru Classé 1855, expresses the nobility of the deep gravel soils of the Bages plateau. A blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, and aged 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels with a portion of new oak, it opens with aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry, hints of cedar and a touch of leather. The tannic frame is precise, the texture silky and the finish succulent. Serve at 16–17°C, after one hour of decanting, for a broad, nuanced expression capable of developing into the 2030s.

Description

Born on the legendary Bages plateau, Château Croizet-Bages 2018 delivers a refined vision of Pauillac, the emblematic AOC of Bordeaux's Left Bank. Classified as a 5th Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it promises a chiselled style where measured power pairs with a remarkable fineness of grain. The generous, luminous 2018 vintage produced opulent ripeness in the berries while preserving structuring freshness. In the glass, this wine gives a precise expression of its deep gravel terroir, the sun-warmed pebbles that restitute heat and drain excess water, promoting even ripening. The result is a high-quality red, concentrated yet supported by a straight backbone, inviting a patient, contemplative tasting, much like lingering before a master painting to discover its hidden harmony.

  • Color: Deep and dense, with a dark core and purple highlights, it signals controlled concentration and serious ageing potential.
  • Nose: Precise bouquet of blackcurrant and blackberry, lifted by notes of cedar, a touch of blond tobacco and a hint of noble leather. Aeration reveals sweet spice accents and finely chiselled oak.
  • Palate: Broad attack, fleshy and structured mid-palate, polished and juicy tannic spine. The wine stretches to a flavorful, fresh finish with a return of dark fruit and sandalwood, leaving a composed sense of length.

Serving temperature and advice

Serve Château Croizet-Bages 2018 at 16–17°C in large tulip-shaped glasses to encourage oxygenation and aromatic precision. About one hour of decanting is recommended, especially in the early years, to soften the structure and reveal the cedar and dark fruit layers. Store bottles on their side, away from light, in a cool, stable cellar. The wine can already be enjoyed with uncommon assurance, but will gain complexity over time, developing further spicy nuances and depth. The drinking window opens now and extends into the 2030s, depending on whether you prefer fresher fruit or the patina of age.

Food pairings

  • Appetisers: Comté gougères, thinly sliced cured meats, parmesan mini pastries that call for the Cabernet's precision.
  • Starters: Veal tartare with a touch of wholegrain mustard, sautéed porcini, game terrine with green peppercorns.
  • Main courses: Grilled rib of beef, herb-crusted rack of lamb, roast duck, risotto with brown mushrooms and reduced jus.
  • Cheeses: 24-month Comté, Ossau-Iraty, mature mimolette, their textures pair well with the wine’s firmness and savoury finish.
  • Desserts: Lightly sweetened fig tart, dark chocolate entremet with tonka bean, served sparingly to let the wine keep its structure.
