Description
Wearing the graceful drive that defines Chambolle’s legend, the Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru “Les Groseilles” 2020 from Domaine de La Pousse d’Or embodies an art of balance where delicacy meets depth. From a discreet 0.5166 hectare southeast-facing parcel rooted in limestone, clay and stony soils, this biodynamically farmed Pinot Noir condenses the purity of Burgundy terroir into a vibrant, nuanced expression. The 2020 vintage, with perfectly controlled ripeness, delivered healthy, concentrated berries, handpicked and then treated with workshop-like care: seven-day cold pre-fermentation maceration, a patient 21-day maceration, malolactic fermentation to round the frame and 15 months ageing in oak barrels, including about 30% new. In the glass, a generous bouquet of dark fruit and soft spices opens before a long, lithe palate carried by filigree tannins and a persistent finish. A haute couture Premier Cru, designed for cellaring and memorable dining moments.
Blend and vinification
This wine is made exclusively from Pinot Noir, the flagship grape of the Côte de Nuits. Biodynamic viticulture accompanies the vine through the seasons to favour a clear reading of place. Hand-harvesting, carried out rigorously, allows careful selection of the bunches. The seven-day cold pre-fermentation maceration enhances the aromatic profile and preserves the freshness of the fruit. The 21-day maceration ensures measured extraction, respectful of the lace-like tannic texture typical of Chambolle. The ageing, lasting 15 months in oak barrels with 30% new oak, refines the contours, adds spicy complexity and polishes the tannins without masking the cru’s singularity. Malolactic fermentation completes the texture, bringing creaminess and harmony. Altogether it yields a precise, vibrant red with great structure.
Tasting notes
- Colour: Deep ruby, clear and luminous, with delicate purplish highlights, promising a balance of intensity and purity.
- Nose: A weave of ripe dark fruits, Morello cherry and blackberry, supported by gentle spices, a hint of violet and tea leaf. Subtle oak integrates gracefully.
- Palate: An upright attack, silky and dynamic texture. The mid-palate, chiselled, unfolds a framework of fine, tight tannins. The finish, long, saline and spicy, testifies to the nobility of the Les Groseilles terroir.
Serving temperature and advice
Serve this Premier Cru at 17°C in large Burgundy glasses to give the bouquet full breadth. A prior airing of 30 to 60 minutes depending on the occasion will help soften the structure and reveal the floral and spicy complexity. The wine can be approached from 2026, will reach a fine peak between 2028 and 2036, and will evolve gracefully through 2042 and beyond if kept in a stable, cool, dark cellar. Avoid thermal shocks and favour attentive service, without harsh decanting, to preserve the delicacy of its texture.
Food pairing
- Appetisers: herb-studded ham, poultry cromesquis, small puff pastry bites with mushrooms.
- Starters: perfect egg with morels, hand‑chopped veal tartare, light game terrine.
- Main courses: roasted free‑range poultry with jus, pink‑seared veal fillet, pigeon with dark berries, porcini risotto with a hint of truffle.
- Cheeses: aged Brillat‑Savarin, gently tempered Époisses, 24‑month Comté for a dialogue between fruit and salinity.
- Desserts: lightly sweet red fruit tart, Morello cherry sable to highlight the fruit with restraint.
