Description
Located on the southern slope of Saint-Émilion, Château Angélus rests on an exceptional terroir composed of clay-limestone soils at the top of the hill and clay-sand-limestone soils on the mid-slope. The vines, averaging 38 years old, benefit from ideal exposure, natural water regulation and remarkable soil structure. The 2019 vintage, blessed with beneficial rainfall and a warm, sunny summer, delivered perfectly ripened grapes. Thanks to the water-retention capacity of the clay-limestone soils, the vines thrived despite the heat. This second year of conversion to organic farming also recorded copper use well below regulatory standards. Harvest began under the best conditions on September 18.
Blend and Winemaking
Château Angélus 2019 is crafted from a blend dominated by Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc, the estate’s signature variety. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless-steel vats with gentle extraction to preserve purity and elegance. Aging for 18 to 22 months in new French oak barrels brings structure, depth and finely integrated toasted notes.
Tasting Notes
A deep, dark, almost opaque color. The nose opens on intense aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, violet and sweet spice, followed by graphite, cocoa and subtle roasted notes. The palate is ample and velvety, supported by powerful yet silky tannins. Layers of ripe black fruits, licorice and dark chocolate unfold with precision. The finish is long, focused and radiant, combining freshness with aromatic depth.
Serving Temperature & Tasting Advice
Serve between 16 and 18°C. Decant for 1 to 2 hours to reveal the wine’s full aromatic complexity. A magnificent wine for long aging: 20 to 40 years or more, developing notes of truffle, tobacco, dried fig and forest floor.
